Graphic Design

Each semester, An Introduction to Graphic Design (ARTS-1602) is offered to explore the connection between art making and its application to visual communication professions such as advertising, marketing and product design.

Students learn to arrange design elements such as line, shape and color effectively. Past projects have included a logo design competition and the creation and display of designs for automobile skins sponsored by BMW.

Major’s may also request to take an Independent Study (ARTS-4000) in their specific concentration. This is only taught by a full time member of the faculty – is not required or expected of the major – and must be approved by the instructor’s and Department’s approval.

Graphic Design courses do not have a lab fee. Georgetown covers equipment maintenance and some classroom supplies. However, students still have to purchase some of their own art supplies, such as paper. This expense is similar to the cost of books in other courses.

Walsh Building Rebrand for the Department of Art & Art History

Students in ARTS 2600 rebranded the Walsh Building, home of the Department of Art & Art History (AAH), through a series of wayfinding and graphics that blur the lines between installation art and environment (architectural) graphics by printing their work on removable floor graphics fabric paper. AAH consists of undergraduate Majors and Minors in Studio Art, Art History, and a graduate program in Museum Studies as well as the Georgetown University Art Galleries. Many students do not know that Georgetown University has a variety studio art classes or Majors and Minors in Art. Most often, students, in search of a bathroom on the second floor, which no longer exists, surprisingly discover the variety of studio classrooms and impromptu galleries of fantastic student artwork on the second floor. Additionally, there are sculpture classes in B-91 and drawing classes in 395. Their task was three-fold:
