Kreeger Awards (1986 — 1991)

The David Lloyd Kreeger Awards in the Fine Arts, awarded from 1986 until 1991, were created to generate interest in creative work among students at Georgetown University. There were initially seven awards for excellence awarded in each of the seven fields in Georgetown’s Fine Arts Department curriculum (Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Sculpture, Art History, Music, and Drama. In addition, a Special Purchase Award for Excellence was created. The winning entries were presented in the Fine Arts Gallery, Walsh 191. The awardees were selected by a jury of professionals outside the University, except for the Special Award for Excellence, which was selected by the Fine Arts faculty. The first David Lloyd Kreeger Awards in the Fine Arts coincided with the opening year of the Fine Arts Gallery in Walsh Building.

David Lloyd Kreeger was an arts patron, musician and philanthropist whose enormous contributions to the life of our nation’s capital are legion. The National Symphony Orchestra, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts are among the many institutions that have benefited from his wisdom and largess. The Kreeger Theatre at Arena Stage and the Kreeger Museum stand as remarkable tributes to his encouragement of the cultural life of this capital city. His home on Foxhall Road N.W. with its collection of paintings and sculpture is open to the public as the Kreeger Museum. Mr Kreeger served on the Board of Directors of Georgetown University and, with his wife Carmen, funded the Kreeger Awards for Excellence in Fine Arts at Georgetown from 1986 until his death in 1990.
