Transforming found materials, Evan Reed crafts sculptures that are at once contemplative, playful, mysterious, and powerful. Recently, the local artist has been plucking his sculptural mediums from the curbside, rather than purchasing them at the art store or hardware center. Stumbling upon old, discarded furniture and household objects set out on collection day engages Reed’s curiosity. His process of discovery begins with a recognition that these items hold memories and associations derived from their original purpose. Transferring that familiarity, Reed combines the artifacts with other sculpted elements to create expressive forms that transcend routine experiences. While social commentary, current events, and personal narratives inform his work, he also celebrates ambiguity in the visual puzzles he presents for us to mull over and decipher. Reed, who received an MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University and a BFA from the Corcoran School of Art, has exhibited his work both nationally and internationally. He is a professor of Art at Georgetown University and maintains his studio practice in Falls Church, VA. Learn more at: Evanreed.com
