Alison Hilton organized and chaired a panel at the annual meeting of the College Art Association (Feb. 3-6, 2016). Titled “Exploring Native Traditions in the Arts of Eastern Europe and Russia,” the two-part session presented new research on art movements that adapted international influences to underlying local and national outlooks.
The nine speakers discussed emerging modernist movements in Poland, Czechoslovakia, the Baltic countries, Bulgaria, and Russia, as well as concepts of national art from the late 18th century to the present. The final discussion offered perspectives on tensions surrounding regional and national identities today.
The College Art Association (CAA) is the preeminent international leadership organization in the visual arts.
