A major in Art History consists
of ten courses, including one studio art course. Potential
majors should take the two Introduction to Art History courses
during the first two years, these are prerequisites for most
upper-level courses. For students entering with AP credit,
the introductory courses may be waived, allowing additional
electives. Four introductory or intermediate-level courses
(100-200 level) will cover at least three of four areas of
distribution (Ancient and Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque,
Modern, and art of non-European traditions). Up to three courses
at this level may be taken outside the department, with an
advisors approval. The three advanced courses (300-400 level)
must include at least two seminars; one of these courses may
be a Museum Internship (430), Directed Studies (420), or an
Art History Senior Thesis (490) with the advisors approval.
Senior majors are urged to take a one-credit Art History Colloquium
(400).
The minor consists of six Art History courses. Students are
encouraged to take at least one of the two Introduction to
Art History courses. At least one course must be on art before
1600 and one on art after 1600. Up to two courses taken outside
the department may count toward the minor with an advisor's
approval.
