Art Program Goals
Foundation level classes (ARTS 001-110)
1. Gain foundation skills in various media that enable them to explore principles and concepts of two-dimensional design and drawing.
2. Study art history.
1. Demonstrate a basic understanding of visual techniques, methods and principles through design and drawing.
2. Apply a basic knowledge of the art history and how it has developed over time and its relevance today.
Intro level classes (ARTS 120-199)
1. Explore various studio art disciplines, gain knowledge of relevant art historical references and resources, and develop critical thinking and problem solving skills.
2.Continue to develop the ability to discuss work and present it in exhibition.
1. Utilize specific tools and techniques of the relevant discipline. Begin to develop a focus of interest and concentration in one discipline and begin to compile a portfolio of works in their field of study. Apply critical thinking and creative problem solving skills to propose personal solutions to aesthetic and formal problems.
2. Build an awareness of the importance of work presentation.
Intermediate level classes (ARTS 200-299)
1. Further the knowledge of materials, techniques, and tools of expression and apply them towards the creation of an individualized and cohesive body of work.
2. Articulate artistic intentions while providing their work with art historical, social, and cultural contexts. Build confidence in their unique aesthetic and critical decision-making.
3. Visit museums and galleries in the DC area to experience art in a larger historical and cultural context.
1. Demonstrate advanced skills and techniques in their area of concentration. Create works that convey personal vision through thought-provoking, aesthetically sophisticated imagery.
2. Develop the ability to analyze and critique artwork using the vocabulary of visual art.
3. To present a body of work in exhibition for the benefit of students to analyze and discuss.
Advanced level classes (ARTS 300-499)
1. Develop a cohesive body of work to be presented in a conclusive exhibition. Gain skills to select the work to be presented as digital or hard copy portfolios accompanied by written materials that will enable application to graduate programs and pursue careers
1. Demonstrate their in-depth knowledge, expression, and vision through a portfolio and exhibition. Articulate ideas and concepts behind their work and provide relevant art historical, social, and cultural context. Demonstrate their organizational and technical skills in documenting art works and compiling a hard copy or virtual web portfolio.
